As you can see, we are all snuggled into our camping spot, but the angle from which a picture is taken can be deceiving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9003_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9003_thumb.jpg?resize=719%2C541&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"719\" height=\"541\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It looks like the tree is snuggling us from this angle. I hope we don\u2019t get a big storm and the tree breaks. We are going out to see if we can find the park\u2019s most famous and special residents, the gopher tortoises. The park is a sanctuary for these tortoises and efforts are being made to create and maintain habitat for this endangered species.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9008.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9008_thumb.jpg?resize=735%2C552&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"735\" height=\"552\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gopher tortoise is Georgia\u2019s state reptile. One of four species native to southwestern North America that migrated to the southeastern area. Due to the introduction of armadillos to the Georgia area the gopher tortoise is in decline. The armadillos are destroying egg nests at an alarming rate causing the gopher tortoise to be put on the endangered species list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9005.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9005_thumb.jpg?resize=739%2C555&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"739\" height=\"555\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also, the loss of long pine tree habitat is adding to the tortoises difficulty. Can you find the tortoise and mound hiding in the wire grass?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9006a.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9006a_thumb.jpg?resize=744%2C565&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"565\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tortoise is an important link in the ecosystem chain. The burrows they create provide homes for, at current count, 360 different species of frogs, snakes, mice and bugs that depend on the turtles for their survival. Now can you see the turtle? We are surprised at how fast these guys are. We thought taking pictures of turtles would be easy. Nope. These big guys move quite quickly and dive back into their burrows if you get too close.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9006.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9006_thumb.jpg?resize=759%2C586&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"759\" height=\"586\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We spend our time hiking the mostly flat trails and driving around looking for wildlife. After searching all day, we arrive back at camp and what do we see? A tortoise burrow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9011.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_9011_thumb.jpg?resize=778%2C584&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"778\" height=\"584\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t happen to have John\u2019s long range lens so I tried taking a picture through my binoculars.
