(and we think waiting on the airport runway for more than 1\/2 hour is inhumane!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0024.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image002\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image002_thumb4.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image002\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All three ships carried passengers and supplies while the Susan Constant, the largest of the ships, also carried livestock\u2026.yeah I don\u2019t think I would want to be sailing on that ship, phew!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image003.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image003\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image003_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image003\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The passengers were not allowed on deck\u2026.yep you guessed it\u2026.4 months in small cramped quarters, sleeping on top of all of the supplies, no baths and lots of chamber pots. There were a few portholes allowing some fresh air and sunlight to filter in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0043.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image004\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image004_thumb3.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image004\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though it may look spacious, fill it with tools, food and beer for the trip, some livestock and their food, plus a few personal items and you run out of room. The passengers had to live on top of their supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image005.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image005\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image005_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image005\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Which turned the living area more into a crawl space. I just can\u2019t imagine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0063.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image006\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image006_thumb3.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image006\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During bad weather the crew may not be able to check on the colonists for days, meaning those chamber pots didn\u2019t get emptied and the corals the livestock were housed in didn\u2019t get cleaned either. Surprisingly, only one colonist died on the trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image007.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image007\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image007_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image007\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not everyone had it so rough. Though modest, the Captain\u2019s quarters were private, well lit and ventilated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0083.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image008\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image008_thumb3.jpg?resize=580%2C438&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image008\" width=\"580\" height=\"438\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The crew quarters were a series of bunk beds very much like the ones you might find on a submarine. They each had their own little space, with a comfy mattress\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image009.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image009\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image009_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image009\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The galley was a fairly large space comparatively, but the cook had a lot of mouths to feed. The fire pit was large and deep with a big opening for venting. An out of control fire on a wooden ship would be disastrous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0102.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image010\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image010_thumb2.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image010\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The settlers arrived at the coast of America late in April 1607, and after 2 weeks of exploring, decided to set up camp along the James River. It was a defensible position (against the Spaniards), and they could be easily re-supplied by ships coming from England.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for them, their selected sight was within the 14,000-strong, powerful Powhatan chiefdom. A couple of squaws!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0141.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image014\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image014_thumb1.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image014\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another challenge facing the colonist was their unfamiliarity with the climate. They arrived too late to plant and harvest food for the winter. Their shaky relationship with the Powhatan, specifically Pocahontas, is what saved the few colonists who survived the first winter.<\/p>\n<p>The original Jamestown settlement was established on the border of swamps and wetlands, which may be great for birds, fish and reptiles but not so much for people. Disease spread by mosquitos and brackish water added to the number deaths.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image015.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image015\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image015_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image015\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the years went by the colony received much needed supplies from England and as additional colonist traveled to the new world, Jamestown began to grow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image0161.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image016\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image016_thumb1.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image016\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the abundance of wood and materials the land provided, houses and business were built.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image017.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image017\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image017_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image017\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1610 a second charter, issued by King James I, brought a governor and a group of advisors to Jamestown to establish a government with laws to bring order to the settlement. I wonder if anyone could fall asleep during a sermon on one of these?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image021.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image021\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image021_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image021\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw some pretty interesting hardware around town so we ventured on over to the blacksmith to ask some questions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image022.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image022\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image022_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image022\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We certainly got a lesson. According to our interpreter blacksmiths were fixers. You would by a chisel from a chisel maker, but if it broke you took it to a blacksmith to get it fixed. If you needed a lock you went to a locksmith. When it broke you took it to the blacksmith to get it fixed.&nbsp; Get the picture?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image023.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image023\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clip_image023_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"clip_image023\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And if you need a gun you go to a gunsmith. A colonist from the army demonstrated a period gun for us. You can see holes in the fence behind him. Tomorrow we are on to Yorktown. The town was then replicated at a different location.
