Originally named Canyon Diablo Crater, fragments from the 150ft meteorite that crashed into Earth at 26,000mph are called Canyon Diablo Meteorites. (In case you are ever in a museum or rock shop that has meteorites you\u2019ll be in the know.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0224.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0224\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0224_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0224\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The crater is around 3,900 feet in diameter, about 570 feet deep. Our guide said that 20 football games could be played on the the floor of the crater with 2 million spectators sitting on sloping sides. Now that puts it more into perspective for me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0212.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 5px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0212\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0212_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C390&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0212\" width=\"580\" height=\"390\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1903 Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer, was convinced that parts of the meteor were buried underground. (they weren\u2019t, much of the meteor vaporized on impact). He staked a mining claim and got to work.
