We spent 3 weeks in South Dakota, making our way across the state, eventually arriving in Sioux Falls where we established our residency, registered to vote and obtained new driver licenses.<\/p>\n<p>We started our trip in Hermosa at a little campground called Heartland RV Park. There were a few sightseeing trips we took as well as some rockhounding.<\/p>\n<p>First stop was a town south of our campground, Hot Springs, where we went to the Mammoth excavation site. About 26,000 years ago a sinkhole opened up, filled with water and due to the \u201chot springs\u201d remained unfrozen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_1303.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_1303_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This water source and the vegetation that grew around the hole drew Columbian and Woolly Mammoths, camels, wolves, and giant bears to its edges. Many fell into the sink hole and were unable to crawl back out.<\/p>\n<p>Mammoths are big\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_1305.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_1305_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next stop was the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. Here wild mustangs, common and rare breeds run free. Rescued, unwanted, unusable mustangs roam the sanctuary created by Dayton O. Hyde.
