Knowing our paths were crossing for only a short time, we packed in the activities.<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was the Valley of Fire Recreation Area (a volcanic flow area) in Carrizozo, NM run by the Bureau of Land management, where we stayed for 3 days of sightseeing and catching up.<\/p>\n<p>The lava flow, created from lava spewing from volcanic vents rather than an eruption, is thought to be the youngest in the continental United States, at 1,500 \u2013 2,000 years old. It stretches 44 miles long covering 125 square miles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_0094.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0094\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_0094_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0094\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the lava cooled and wind deposited soil and seeds, plants took root and the lava flow came alive.
