{"id":2393,"date":"2013-02-25T21:04:58","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T02:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/?p=2393"},"modified":"2023-07-02T23:43:36","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T03:43:36","slug":"oliver-lee-state-park-alamogordo-nm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/archives\/2393","title":{"rendered":"Oliver Lee State Park, Alamogordo NM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we were driving up the road to our new backyard, all John kept saying was \u201cwow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_0935.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_0935_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After we got parked all he said was \u201cWe so have to climb that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/two.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/two_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oliver Lee Memorial State Park was once home the the Apaches and one of New Mexico\u2019s most influential and \u201ccolorful\u201d ranchers.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the base of the Sacramento Mountains it is an oasis where water flows year round and ferns cling to mossy rocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0001.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0001\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0001_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0001\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dog Canyon is directly behind the campground. The Apaches used the steep canyon as a stronghold during the 19th century conflicts with the US. Miners came here looking for riches and Billy the Kid was said to have hid in the canyon as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0014.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0014\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0014_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0014\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a plaque I found in the campground office, Dog Canyon got its name when the Spanish invaded and the Apaches escaped through the canyon. When the Spanish reached the Apache camp all they found was a dog that had been left behind. So they called it Dog Canyon.<\/p>\n<p>OK\u2026time to hike the rugged, steep trail. It is a 10 mile round trip hike, but we decided to do only 4 miles. (ssshhh\u2026.don\u2019t tell John\u2019s knee doctor)<\/p>\n<p>John is obsessed with what our elevation is no matter where we go. Before we left camp we had to take a reading\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/one.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/one_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get to this point, leaving the State Park and entering the National forest, we walked about a .5 mile switchback. Ever hike a switchback? Then you know what we went through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_0894.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_0894_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From there on out it was up a bit, level a bit, up a bit and so on until we reached the two mile marker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0009.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"DSC_0009\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DSC_0009_thumb.jpg?resize=580%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0009\" width=\"580\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A fairly strenuous hike, but still not as bad as the Black Forest Trail in Pennsylvania. It is painful! Our poor old knees sssooo can\u2019t take this.
