There are a few major highways between cities but not too many that let you trek off into the wilderness. For that you need a plane or a train, and in some instances, a boat, or some dogs and a sled. We have opted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskarailroad.com\/ride-a-train\/our-trains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glacier Discovery Train<\/a>\u2014I mean who doesn\u2019t love riding a train. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_130756.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200716_130756\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_130756_thumb.jpg?resize=901%2C676&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200716_130756\" width=\"901\" height=\"676\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We are going to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaska.org\/detail\/spencer-glacier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Glacier<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_132349.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200716_132349\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_132349_thumb.jpg?resize=907%2C681&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200716_132349\" width=\"907\" height=\"681\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019ve often said I think it would be cool to take a train ride across the country. This one doesn\u2019t have sleeper cars but it does have a snack bar and a domed-roof car for better viewing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010521.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010521\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010521_thumb.jpg?resize=922%2C692&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010521\" width=\"922\" height=\"692\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The nice thing about riding the train is that we both get to look around, and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">we get to view scenery that not many people get to see. It is actually very relaxing clacking along, swaying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010518.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010518\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010518_thumb.jpg?resize=928%2C697&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010518\" width=\"928\" height=\"697\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019m still hoping to see a moose, at least more than just one\u2019s butt. When I look at landscape like this I feel like there should be a moose out there. Is this not gorgeous? I don\u2019t know if the moose care but\u2014location, location, location, right? There is plenty of food, a waterfall, and cover to hide in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010533.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010533\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010533_thumb.jpg?resize=926%2C695&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010533\" width=\"926\" height=\"695\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We cross over the 20 Mile River that is fed by the 20 Mile Glacier. See it way out there?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010530.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010530\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010530_thumb.jpg?resize=939%2C705&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010530\" width=\"939\" height=\"705\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">After about 30 minutes on the train we arrive at Spencer Glacier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010534.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010534\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010534_thumb.jpg?resize=931%2C699&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010534\" width=\"931\" height=\"699\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskanrafting.com\/product\/spencer-iceberg-placer-river-float\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chugach Adventures<\/a> offers a rafting trip around the Spencer Glacier Lake and then down the Placer River. To get there we have to take a 2-mile bus ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010535.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010535\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010535_thumb.jpg?resize=940%2C706&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010535\" width=\"940\" height=\"706\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Yeah, it\u2019s a school bus. But there aren\u2019t any roads, how did the bus get here?. That\u2019s correct, there aren\u2019t any roads to here. All the vehicles at this encampment are brought by flatbed on the train in the spring and pulled out in the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_135839.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200716_135839\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200716_135839_thumb.jpg?resize=940%2C706&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200716_135839\" width=\"940\" height=\"706\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our driver, one of the guides, cranks up the music, <em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>, and we bounce along a road that would give our Jeep a workout! I don\u2019t know how this bus stays in one piece. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll stay in one piece!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010537.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010537\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010537_thumb.jpg?resize=933%2C701&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010537\" width=\"933\" height=\"701\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There are waterfalls all over the mountains from the snowmelt. Alaskan\u2019s are not wasteful people and that goes for their outdoor adventure as well. They ski these mountains, but you have to take a helicopter ride to the top. No ski lifts here. The light green area indicates where an avalanche has occurred, ripping up all the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010543.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010543\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010543_thumb.jpg?resize=936%2C703&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010543\" width=\"936\" height=\"703\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As we are pulling into the parking area, we get our first glimpse of the Spencer Glacier. It rises 3,500 feet from the water to its top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010544.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010544\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010544_thumb.jpg?resize=936%2C703&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010544\" width=\"936\" height=\"703\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It is so big and so\u2026blue! And look at the icebergs. Selfie time! Yes, we are outside but we have been asked to wear our masks. That\u2019s okay, they are keeping our faces warm. This gnawed-on antler was found close by. I wonder what chewed on it? Cory has his work cut out for him. By the end of summer they will be mostly melted. Brrr. If you look closely you can see water dripping into the lake as the iceberg melts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010571.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010571\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010571_thumb.jpg?resize=939%2C705&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010571\" width=\"939\" height=\"705\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the raft ahead of us, there is a family of five and the kids are licking the iceberg. We decide to touch a different iceberg. COVID and all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010564.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"P1010564\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/P1010564_thumb.jpg?resize=939%2C705&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P1010564\" width=\"939\" height=\"705\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I ask if we are going to get close to the actual glacier. Cory says it is at least two miles away from us at this spot. I mean, it looks like it\u2019s right there! The bridge is finished, but the plans to create or extend the hiking trail has been abandoned. Trees that have been chewed are along the banks. Some of the sign looks to have happened fairly recently.
