It\u2019s time for more sightseeing. We are again traveling north, and this time we are bringing John\u2019s coworker Martin, with us. It joins up with Fishhook Creek, a lazy waterway compared to the roaring glacial river.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_103315-rotated.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_103315\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_103315_thumb.jpg?resize=726%2C546&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_103315\" width=\"726\" height=\"546\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In September of 1906, Robert Lee Hatcher staked the first hard rock (lode) gold claim in the Willow Valley, on Granite Mountain and named it the Independence Mine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_104810.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_104810\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_104810_thumb.jpg?resize=729%2C548&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_104810\" width=\"729\" height=\"548\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Post World War II, mining became unprofitable and in 1951, after producing approximately $6 million worth of gold, the mine was officially closed. You can read more about the mine <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.alaska.gov\/parks\/units\/indmine.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3658_50073663693_o.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"img_3658_50073663693_o\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3658_50073663693_o_thumb.jpg?resize=724%2C544&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"img_3658_50073663693_o\" width=\"724\" height=\"544\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The town is on the National Register, and slowly they are restoring and preserving the buildings that are standing. This year four buildings are available to tour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3573_50073712048_o.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"img_3573_50073712048_o\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3573_50073712048_o_thumb.jpg?resize=735%2C552&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"img_3573_50073712048_o\" width=\"735\" height=\"552\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remnants, tailings, of the blasting and rock crushing can be seen at the base of the gray granite mountain. Below that, part of the trellis structure for the mining train rails are still standing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_111618.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_111618\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_111618_thumb.jpg?resize=728%2C514&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_111618\" width=\"728\" height=\"514\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Establishing the rail system in 1940, greatly improved the efficiency of the mining operation. This is one of the mining trains that was used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_115212.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_115212\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_115212_thumb.jpg?resize=729%2C508&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_115212\" width=\"729\" height=\"508\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along with the water tunnel, this allowed the ore, personnel, and supplies to be moved quickly in and out of the mine. It was nice and cool inside the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3646_50073672818_o.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"img_3646_50073672818_o\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3646_50073672818_o_thumb.jpg?resize=736%2C553&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"img_3646_50073672818_o\" width=\"736\" height=\"553\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We spent hours walking around the grounds, touring the buildings and just enjoying the serenity of the place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_113024.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_113024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_113024_thumb.jpg?resize=741%2C557&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_113024\" width=\"741\" height=\"557\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is mostly sunny and around 80 degrees. The sun is warming the thousands of acres of tiny mountain heather flowers that carpet the ground. I can smell their subtle, sweet scent on the light breeze that is blowing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_113441.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_113441\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_113441_thumb.jpg?resize=735%2C552&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_113441\" width=\"735\" height=\"552\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We all could spend more time here but we have other things to see today. From here we are taking Hatcher Pass over to Willow. So far John and Martin have both seen a moose. I have seen a marmot. Sigh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_130301.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_130301\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_130301_thumb.jpg?resize=743%2C558&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_130301\" width=\"743\" height=\"558\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We get to Hatcher Pass Summit without any other wildlife gracing our drive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_131015.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_131015\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_131015_thumb.jpg?resize=744%2C559&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_131015\" width=\"744\" height=\"559\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is much cooler up here than it was at Independence Mine as the heavier snow cover indicates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3721_50073799803_o.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"img_3721_50073799803_o\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3721_50073799803_o_thumb.jpg?resize=744%2C559&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"img_3721_50073799803_o\" width=\"744\" height=\"559\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cooler temperatures sometimes mean a different kind of wildlife is around. Mountain sheep? Mountain goats? You decide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3715_50074451832_o.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"img_3715_50074451832_o\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img_3715_50074451832_o_thumb.jpg?resize=747%2C561&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"img_3715_50074451832_o\" width=\"747\" height=\"561\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We do get a great view of the valley. I wish we had the time; there are a lot of hiking trails around here that I bet lead to even more spectacular views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_131241.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_131241\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_131241_thumb.jpg?resize=750%2C564&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_131241\" width=\"750\" height=\"564\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We couldn\u2019t see the lake from the summit, but down around the mountain here it is. The last we heard about Summit Lake is that it is frozen over. Well, here it is July 3 and it is almost ice free.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_132000.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_132000\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_132000_thumb.jpg?resize=757%2C569&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_132000\" width=\"757\" height=\"569\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh my gosh. The cutest little baby birds are in the road! EEE! I need a picture! They won\u2019t hold still so I decide to get out and chase the little buggers down. John and Martin are laughing at me I\u2019m sure but I got some good pictures. When I get too close they lay down really fast! Best guess, these are bufflehead ducklings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_134007.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_134007\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_134007_thumb.jpg?resize=753%2C566&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_134007\" width=\"753\" height=\"566\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we are approaching the end of the pass and almost at sea level, the pine trees are appearing but what we see is devastating. The mountains are covered with dead trees for as far as you can see. Could this be the pine bark beetle?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_135157.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200703_135157\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200703_135157_thumb.jpg?resize=760%2C571&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200703_135157\" width=\"760\" height=\"571\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our last stop today are two Denali viewing areas. One just outside of Talkeetna (towl-KEET-nah) and one further up HWY 3. As we are approaching I kept thinking the top of Denali was a cloud. It is a bit cloudy but no, that is the peak of the mountain sticking out of the cloud.
