To get us warmed up, we head out to the Fortuna Mine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200317_082152.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200317_082152\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200317_082152_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200317_082152\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is a fairly easy trail with a couple of \u201cfun&#8221; spots. A good warmup trail to test our off-road driving skills.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_123248_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"20200223_123248\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_123248_thumb.jpg?resize=666%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_123248\" width=\"666\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The trail might be easy, but what is up with these signs all along the road?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_123246-rotated.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_123246\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_123246_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_123246\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As we get closer to the mining area, we do see a lot of what appear to be holes in the mountain sides.\u00a0 Okay, so there is some concern, especially if you are one of those people who have no sense of personal safety and like to crawl into holes in the ground.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_111742.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_111742\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_111742_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_111742\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Anyhow, as we are approaching the Fortuna Mine there is a road off to the left with sign indicating a site we might want to see. OKay!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Basically, it is the most complete structure left from the mining camp. It was a water reservoir measuring 30\u2019 x 45\u2019 and was said to hold a million gallons of water. Really? It provided water for the camp, and fire fighting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_105637.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_105637\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_105637_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_105637\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The road to the structure is steep but from the top, it doesn\u2019t look like much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_110416.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_110416\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_110416_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_110416\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Until you watch someone coming up the road, like Andy and Candy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><div style=\" position: relative; \"><h3 id=\"default_title080\"><\/h3><embed id=\"n080080\" wmode=\"opaque\" src=\"https:\/\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-flash-player\/hdflvplayer\/hdplayer.swf\"\n               type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"\n               flashvars=\"baserefWP=https:\/\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog&amp;vid=8&amp;player=0\n                   &amp;videodata=current_video_080\"\n               width=\"640\" height=\"480\"\/>  <\/div><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We had to climb to the actual reservoir. Jeeps can get you lots of places, but sometimes you just have to hike. Andy? Candy? Is that you way up there?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_110720.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_110720\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_110720_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_110720\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Looking at the structure, we decide that unless there is a lot of fallen rock and dirt, there is no way this held a million gallons of water. Yep, there is a big whole in the ground.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_115026.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_115026\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_115026_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_115026\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Remnants of the mining operation can be found lying around the site, like this cable used for hauling the ore out of the mine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_112618.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_112618\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_112618_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_112618\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I\u2019m finding this whole thing a little underwhelming as a site-seeing spot. The story about it is interesting though, so it was worth the drive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>John wants to do some rockhounding while we are here, and we stroll out into the desert.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Spring is coming soon, and the early blooming cacti and plants are starting to show their colors, like this Octillo cactus. It is hard to see from this picture but the flowers on the ends of the stems are red.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_115529.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_115529\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_115529_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_115529\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And check out these beautiful blooms! The men have wandered off somewhere. Well, at least Candy and I think they did. Apparently, they knew right where we were. What a surprise! This isn\u2019t listed in the Off Road Guide. It is what is left of the Stamp Mill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_120813.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_120813\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_120813_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_120813\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They are mining for gold. How do you get gold out of ore? You pulverize the ore into powder and use sluices to sift out the gold. For that, you need a stamp mill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_120823.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"20200223_120823\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.2dogsbarkin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/20200223_120823_thumb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"20200223_120823\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Stamp Mill was powered by and engine that required five wood-burning boilers. So that\u2019s what all the gray stuff is that doesn\u2019t look like the surrounding terrain.
